Innovations in renewable energy technology are paving the way towards a sustainable and resilient energy future. Renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal, are becoming increasingly vital in our transition to a low-carbon economy. The rapid advancement in technology and declining costs have made these energy sources more accessible and efficient. Some key areas of innovation include solar power, wind energy, smart grids and a lot more.
A recent report from Clean Energy Australia highlights the impressive progress in the nation's renewable energy sector. The report found that renewables accounted for nearly 40 percent of Australia's total electricity supply in 2023, with a generation capacity of 5.9 GW added, up from 5 GW in 2022.
Clean Energy Council Chief Executive Kane Thornton emphasized that renewables have reached a critical tipping point in Australia's energy mix. “Renewables comprised 39.4 percent of Australia’s total generation in 2023, an increase of 9.7 percent in a single year. This is a major increase from 2017, when the share was just 17 percent,” Thornton said. Additionally, 2023 saw significant investments in utility-scale storage, with twenty-seven battery projects under construction, totaling $4.9 billion in investment.
Rooftop solar also continued to grow, with 3.1 GW of new capacity added, and 337,498 households and businesses installing rooftop solar. This accounted for 28.5 percent of all renewable generation nationally, underscoring its role in reducing energy bills and supporting Australia's clean energy transition.
