Australia Day in the Western Downs was extra special this year as the Dalby & District Australia Day Awards shone a spotlight on one of the region’s quiet achievers. Sharlene Smith, a participant of the Sarina Russo Job Access Inclusive Employment Australia program.
Our Inclusive Employment Australia team in Dalby had the privilege of attending the celebrations to support Sharlene, who was honoured with the Volunteer of the Year Award. The recognition reflects her tireless dedication to uplifting her community through a wide range of volunteer initiatives.
From her involvement in the Goondir Big Buddy Program and Coffee Van Venture, to her creative contributions at the Myall 107 Art Gallery, the Delicious & Delightful Festival, and several other local events, Sharlene’s presence is felt across the region. Her enthusiasm, compassion and unwavering willingness to lend a hand have made her a beloved figure in the Western Downs.
But what made this moment especially meaningful is how far Sharlene has come in such a short time.
Sharlene joined the Inclusive Employment Australia program in November and has already made remarkable progress, recently securing a role with Dollars and Sense, where she’s thriving. Her journey is a powerful example of what can happen when individuals are supported with the right opportunities, encouragement and pathways to meaningful employment.
At Sarina Russo Job Access, our Inclusive Employment Australia program is designed to empower people of all abilities to build confidence, gain independence and connect with inclusive employers. Seeing Sharlene not only succeed at work but also be publicly celebrated for her community impact reminds us why this mission matters.
We could not be prouder of Sharlene, her story is a reminder that when people are supported to shine, whole communities benefit. Congratulations, Sharlene. The future is bright, and we can’t wait to see what you achieve next.
