Community comes together at Dalby Hospital for National Close the Gap Day

Today at Dalby Hospital, the community came together to recognise National Close the Gap Day; a vibrant celebration focused on culture, connection and the ongoing commitment to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Hosted by Darling Downs Health, the event welcomed the whole community and created a warm, inclusive space for learning, sharing, and celebrating cultural identity. Attendees enjoyed a rich program that highlighted the importance of culturally safe care and community-led wellbeing initiatives. Activities included cultural dance workshops, yarning circles, weaving sessions, kids’ art activities, Fire Department demonstrations, live music, and a free shared lunch, all designed to foster connection and acknowledge the importance of Closing the Gap in health equality.

Beyond the festivities, the day also served as a reminder of the national commitment to addressing inequalities in health and life expectancy. Close the Gap Day is a moment for reflection, partnership and action; reinforcing that real progress happens when communities, services, and organisations work together in genuine collaboration.
The event was attended by Sarina Russo Job Access (SRJA) Inclusive Employment Australia, Workforce Australia and Parent Pathways teams, alongside Violet Geesu, SRJA National Indigenous Services Manager, who joined the community in recognising and supporting National Close the Gap Day.

Today’s gathering at Dalby Hospital stood as a positive example of that partnership in action: community voices being heard, culture being celebrated, and a shared commitment to meaningful change being strengthened.

We look forward to building on the connections we have made today, for the benefit of our participants, our region and the betterment of our society overall.
