National Skills Week

This year marks the 11th anniversary of National Skills Week, held between the 23rd – 29th of August.

National Skills Week is a nationwide initiative that showcases and celebrates the breadth of career opportunities that Australia’s innovative Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector offers.

Thinking that university equals success, many high school students and their parents do not consider VET as a potential post-school pathway. A common myth is that VET graduates earn low wages. This is false. In a recent report conducted by the Skilling Australia Foundation, they found that VET graduates had a higher initial earning capacity and earned more than an average university graduate. ¹

Another myth is that it’s harder for VET graduates to gain employment post-study in comparison to university graduates. This again is untrue. VET offers qualifications that are nationally (and often internationally) recognised and links skills training with job outcomes. Career prospects for VET graduates are high and more than 78% of VET graduates find employment straight after training. ²

Sarina Russo Institute RTO Director, Jane Roberts says, “We are certainly seeing a need for skilled Health and Community Care Workers. The Human Services Skills Organisation (HSSO) estimates Australia will need 1 million workers in this area by 2050.  There’s never been a better time to complete a VET course in Australia’s fastest-growing sector. There are jobs waiting for skilled and motivated workers.”

This year the Sarina Russo Group is celebrating National Skills Week by encouraging school leavers and job seekers to speak to professional Career Counsellors and to help you choose a study pathway that will skyrocket your career.

If you’re considering further education and would like to speak to one of our friendly Career Counsellors, please don’t hesitate to email us at: [email protected]. The Sarina Russo Group offers both VET and higher education.
